The Marumi Step-down rings are made from light-weight hard-anodized aluminum, which is more durable than plain aluminum or made from plastic.
If you have 37mm lens threads and want to fit a 46mm filter, you need a step-up ring. If you have 46mm lens threads and want to fit a 37mm filter, you need a step-down ring.
Step-down rings are not as often used as step-up rings because, in most cases, the smaller filter sizes result in vignetting.
